Gendered digital mediation in rural education: Common Service Centres (CSCs) as social institutions

Abstract
The paper explores the sociological aspects of
digital mediation in the ecosystem of the Common Service Centres in India
(CSCs). Although the Digital India mission makes CSCs neutral infrastructure of
e-governance and educational provision, this is why the current research
proposes that they serve as social institutions, embedded in the rural power
structures. The work breaks down the theory of habitus as proposed by Bourdieu,
technofeminism as proposed by Wajcman, and the spatial sociology and uses this
conceptual framework to analyse the role of the Village Level Entrepreneur
(VLE) as a gendered gatekeeper. The paper shows that access to digital
education among women is not only limited by the lack of connectivity, but also
by the so-called mediation biases, such as spatial marginalisation, temporal
impoverishment, and patriarchal control. The results indicate that the VLE
model may start replicating instead of mitigating the inequalities in rural
education without a sociological restructuring of the model.
