Abstract
Youth participation in Indian electoral democracy is a critical factor shaping the present and future of governance in the world’s largest democracy. India has one of the largest youth populations globally, making young voters a highly influential demographic group in determining electoral outcomes and influencing political direction at national, state, and local levels. In recent years, youth engagement in electoral processes has increased significantly due to rising digital awareness, widespread use of social media platforms, improved literacy levels, and growing political consciousness among first-time voters. Initiatives undertaken by the Election Commission of India, particularly the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) programmed, have played an important role in encouraging voter registration and participation among youth. These efforts, combined with digital campaigns and educational outreach, have helped strengthen democratic participation among young citizens. At the same time, academic studies and electoral reports (2024–2026 context) indicate that Generation Z and millennials are becoming increasingly active in shaping electoral narratives, political campaigns, and democratic discourse in India. However, despite this positive trend, several challenges continue to restrict full participation. Issues such as political apathy, unemployment, misinformation on digital platforms, and limited representation of youth in formal political structures reduce the effectiveness of their engagement. Nevertheless, the growing influence of young voters in India reflects a significant transformation in electoral democracy, where informed, digital, and issue-based participation is gradually redefining the political landscape.
